Planning Usage: B1 Business / Office
A neo-classical former emporium transformed into 21st century office space. With available commercial space ranging from.
For those with a keen eye for quality, who enjoy a quirk of history, and are looking for a commercial home in one of the most genuinely exciting parts of London.
Dept. W is the former Wickham’s Department Store right in the heart
of Whitechapel. The redevelopment pays wonderful recognition to the building’s unique and charming past while providing the future-looking requirements and expectations of its coming users.
The original building was constructed in 1927 for the Wickham family who ambitiously saw their department store becoming the ‘Harrods of the East End’.
The family had successfully bought up all the properties required along this stretch of the Mile End Road to make way for their plans. All the properties but one, that is. No. 81 simply refused to sell. Rumour has it that its owners, the Spiegelhalter family, turned down a not insignificant sum of money in order to keep hold of their small jewellery and clock-making establishment.
The plucky Spiegelhalters certainly halted the Wickham’s progress and forced them to incorporate the little, but no less defiant, unit into the otherwise, and now iconic, neo-classical frontage.
The design of Dept. W carefully preserves and restores the facade of the Spiegelhalter space, turning it into the new entrance and heart of the development, paying homage to a history which has no shortage of heart itself. “It has been wonderful to the restoration of a London landmark and former family treasure with so many of the historic features restored to greatness.” Joanna Wickham.
An under 8 minute walk from Dept.W easily sees you to Whitechapel station (Underground, Overground and soon
Crossrail), Bethnal Green (Overground and Underground) and Stepney Green (Underground).
The greatly anticipated Elizabeth Line, Europe’s largest infrastructure project and over a decade in the making, arrives during Q3/4 2020.
Dept. W is a 6 minute walk away from Whitechapel’s new Crossrail Station where a high frequency, high capacity service is changing the pace of travel for millions whilst enhancing Whitechapel’s reputation as a destination with a truly unique sense of place in 21st Century London.
